How to get "A Quick One" in stereo...
Alot of people have had problems finding "A Quick One" in stereo. Here`s the deal, your best bet is to buy the Polydor UK version of the CD. The artwork on the US MCA version is unchanged so it`s impossible to know if it`s the correct CD without taking the shrinkwrap off. Once you do that, you can`t return it if it is the incorrect CD. With the Polydor import, all of the artwork on the package is the same (including the 1995 copyright date) EXCEPT for the catalog number on the binding. This will allow you to see if you have indeed received the correct CD without tearing the shrinkwrap off.
Here are the different catalog numbers:
* Polydor 527758-2 - maily mono
* Polydor 589800-2 - mainly stereo

I hope this helps everybody!

A Fine Example of How All Re-issues Should be Done!
I was delighted (nay, ecstatic) to find this gem among the train wreck of the Who`s early re-issue catalog. Let me say right off that the sound quality of this UK import is consistantly top-notch all the way through. And, as advertised, it IS almost entirely in true, authentic stereo (I suppose we can forgive the three minor songs that aren`t). I purchased the 1995 US version of this CD a few years ago and was outraged to find that even though the disc said STEREO right on it, it was mostly in mono. And the sound quality, like much of the other re-issued material, was shrill and distortion-ridden in places. But this UK release does not suffer from those problems. This much-overlooked album disserves to be heard like this. "Boris the Spider", "Heat Wave", and "So Sad About Us" in particular have a fresh, clean sound in wonderful, wonderful stereo! Happy listening!
Finally Got It Right This Time--Well, Close Enough!
If you share my love for The Who--but also my skeptical nature, you`re likely growing a bit leery with the continuous re-repackaging and re-reissuing of the band`s catalog, particularly after the deluxe "My Generation" came up so agonizingly shy of its potential. Please allow me, then, to calm any misgivings you have about this issue of The Who`s wonderful sophomore album, by assuring you that THIS is the one we`ve been waiting for. Outside of Roger`s "See My Way` all the album tracks are in true, crisp stereo--and as many are also remixed, the sound quality far exceeds that of any past editions. The wide, crystal stereo mix of the mini-opera "A Quick One While He`s Away" knocks me out, completely disgracing the old US stereo mix. "Run, Run, Run" goes on about ten seconds longer at the end than we`d before heard, and there`s a vocal on the closing chord of "So Sad About Us" which never appeared on any previous mix of the track. Also, "Heatwave," "Don`t Look Away" and "Whiskey Man" (John`s flirtation with insanity), previously only available in true stereo on German and Japanese vinyl, are all here. Standouts amongst the bonus tracks are fresh remixes of "Bucket T" and "Barbara Ann," which bring the vocals to greater prominence (and a degree of stereo) than did the old EP mono mixes. Of course, perfection is perpetually elusive--and keeping with that time-honored tradition, there are two minor flaws you should beware of. The inferior old stereo mix of "Disguises" appears here, which succeeds in badly muffling many of the sounds which made this such a progressive recording for its time. Also, John`s "Doctor Doctor" appears in a pretty poor electronically-reprocessed form--for whatever reason. Both these cuts can be found in their superior mono forms on the 1995 version of this album, as well as the now out-of-print, collectible Polydor "Back To Back Rarities" cd (no, mine is NOT for sale!) I do agree with the previous reviewer`s assertion that the single version of "Happy Jack" could have been included here--after all, its UK B-side, John`s "I`ve Been Away," is here. (A similar case could be made for including "I`m A Boy" and "Pictures Of Lily.") All of this aside, however: Even for the import price, I believe you`ll find it well worth your while to purchase this 2003 version of "A Quick One." Particularly concerning the original LP`s material, these tracks has never, ever sounded better--and likely never will. Highly recommended!
