Sans the Creativity | Being a big Who fan who caught two incredible shows on this supposed farewell -- ahem-- tour in 1982 (with the Clash opening one of the shows...ooooooh), this, clearly the weakest of the Who`s live efforts, struck me as a sloppy, bloodless, postmortem by MCA to cash in. Everything about this package screams minimal effort. Little to recommend here except so-so performances of the favorites that are undermined by the surprisingly poor sound quality for a major label release. As with other reviewers, I am dumbfounded by the complete lack of Kenny Jones-era material, understated records that, especially in the case of "Face Dances," have actually aged pretty well. For vintage live Who try perhaps the greatest live record ever, "Live at Leeds"....for polished, punchy later-era Who, give "Join Together" a listen...For a decent keepsake of this particular tour, seek out a video or DVD of "The Who Rocks America." The sound quality alone outstrips what is here. | | | | Who cares? | | `I Can`t Explain` why they made this musical mess...and neither can they aparrently. I hate this group, I really do. So should you. | | | | Pretty ok for Kenney Jones | | I recently received this album because I was curious about stuff out there without Keith Moon, god forbid. I didn`t enjoy It`s hard, in its entirety. Face dances was good but there was just something disatisfiening about it. This album doesn`t have any songs from the albums I just mentioned. This includes the old classics that we have all heard before. These live songs sound good however, the power the band had with Moon live is lost. Dr. Jimmy is the best sounding song on the album, which is off Quadrophenia, if you enjoy live Quadrophenia, an excellent version of Dr. Jimmy appears on the album, Tales from the WHo, December 4th, 1973. This really is a very underated album. This is a very interesting time period in the who`s career. This is the only live album of the who with Kenney Jones playing the drums. Keith Moon is needed badly here, even Simon Phillips would be more entertaining here however, Kenney Jones plays one song especially well, Won`t get fooled again, the rest of the songs he doesn`t seem to try on though. This is essential if you are collecting live who albums. If you are doing just that, let me give you a list of live material that is available. Live at Leeds, from February 14th, 1970. Who`s Last, from the 1982, rocks america tour. Join together, from the 1989 Tommy tour -especially good. Live at the royal albert hall, from the royal albert hall in 2002. The rest are bootlegs. I won`t try and begin with those! | | | -- zzzz |
