Usually ships in 24 hours | | | Not the Who disc you`re looking for | | If you are thinking about buying this cd, please read this first. Being an exceptionally great band, I don`t believe that this disc is a true representation of the Who`s "greatist hits." While it does contain songs which are truly near to my heart--Won`t Get Fooled Again being one of them--the album seems more of a attempt to earn a profit by cashing in on the millenium craze than a true record for the consumer. Sure, there are some absolutely great songs here (this being the only reason I didn`t give it the minimum one star), but there is simply too much left out and overlooked to be a true compilation of their best. If you are new to the Who, try the My Generation--the Very Best of the Who disc instead. It contains many more songs which I believe give the listener a better idea of what these guys were all about. Trust me, I started out with that album, and now I`m absolutely hooked. | | | | I Can`t Explain | | Why are so many hit songs from the Who missing on this CD? "I Can`t Explain," "Baba O`Reily," "The Kids Are All Right," and other hit songs are all missing. If you`re a die-hard fan of the Who and this is the only CD you don`t have, go ahead and buy it. But if you`re new to the Who, here`s what to do: get "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" and "Who`s Next." Those two CDs offer what really is the best of the Who. I call that a bargain, the best I ever had. | | | | Redefines `lacking` | | First off, I wish to state that my poor rating for this disc is due to the compilation, not the music, which is certainly five-star music. Even if you want to remain a casual Who fan, there are greater greatest-hits compilations. The Who: Ultimate Collection is very good, but is over twenty-dollars and has two discs. In my mind, it is perfect, but if you would like an inexpensive, single-dish Who greatest hits album, pick up My Generation: The Very Best of The Who. It is three dollars more (14.99 vs. 11.98), yet it contains tenty essential tracks, while this one only contains ten. Fortunately, there are no edits on either album, although this album (20th Century Masters) onlt has the single version of `HAppy Jack`; at least both have the full-length version of `Won`t Get Fooled Again,` a long track that is usually buthered on radio stations; the 20th Century album probably doesn`t buther it because the album is too short anyway. It doesn`t even come close to filling a CD`s capacity; both of these discs (`My Generation,` and the reviewed one) are single-disc albums and similarly priced. What`s the difference, you say? `My Generation` contains every track on this album, and ten others, including I Can`t Explain, Substitute, I`m A Boy, and Baba O`Riley (a.k.a. Teenage Wasteland). This album is not terrible; compared to what seels great these days, it is still worth it`s price, but I just don`t understand why you would get this album when you could get `My Generation` for a little bit more. And if you`d like a little more Who than a single disc greatest hits compilation, The Who: Ultimate Collection, a two-disc best-of The Who album has everything a hardcore casual Who fan needs. The Who are notorious for greatest hits albums; the following are greatest hits collections from The Who (not including live or box set compilations): "Meaty, Beaty, Big, & Bouncy," "Who`s Better, Who`s Best," "The Who: Ultimate Collection (Which a reviewer called, "The Best of the Who`s 246 compilations or so")," "My Generation: The Very Best of The Who," and this ("20th Century Masters: The Best of The Who"). Bottom line-for casual inexpensive Who greatness, pick up "My Generation: The Very Best of The Who"; for a slightly more epic, longer double-greatest hits album, get "The Who: The Ultimate Collection."
