Usually ships in 24 hours | | | This is the best live recording ever | I`m not the world`s biggest fan of The Who, and I must admit, I haven`t heard Live at Leeds, but I must say, this show at the Isle of Wight sounds awesome to me. The Who starts out with a few songs that are a bit too long and get boring after about two minutes (for example, "Young Man Blues" which is 5:38, "I Don`t Even Know Myself," 5:12 and "Water," 9:05. But I suppose that must be what they`re great at: churning out long, drawn-out rock songs for hours at a time. The best is, of course, "Tommy." The beginning chords of the "Overture," seem a little thin and strained, but it begins to pick up speed once they really get into it. "Sparks" is great, although it`s a little bit long, (5:10), but it`s not too bad. Disc Two opens with "The Acid Queen," which is one of the worst songs from Tommy. But, then comes the best song on the whole album, "PINBALL WIZARD." The band seems to sing it a little off-key, but that just adds to the "live" feel. The best loud, rock-n-roll tracks on disc 2 are "Go to the Mirror," "Fiddle About" and "I`m Free." This is an awesome album. Don`t miss it. | | | | The Who at their prime. | This double cd highlights The Who`s appearance at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival, and is a worthy purchase. The show was running late, resulting in The Who not taking the stage until 2 or 3 in the morning. But they still played with all the energy of an earlier show. First, the band runs through several hits, such as "Heaven and Hell", "I Can`t explain", and "Young Man`s Blues". Two songs that were still new at the time ("I Don`t Even Know Myself" and "Water") are next. Most of the songs from "Tommy" are next, and the show wraps with a few more classics, such as "My Generation". All the performances here are excellent. Recorded the same year as "Live at Leeds", this cd makes a terrific companion to the "Leeds" cd. The Who clearly blew away the audience that night. Roger Daltry was at the top of his game with his singing, the rest of band`s playing was thrilling. In fact, the only reason the show ended was because Pete Tomnshend`s guitar accidently (!!!) broke. The show remained in the archives until 1996, when it was finally released. Better late than never. Fans will want to add this album to their collection. | | | | Where else can you find almost all of Tommy? | | The reviews submitted below somewhat baffle me. The performance is terrific, albeit not perfection, the kind which you could only expect on a studio album. Everyone in the group is in find form, and they all know it. In the liner notes to this set, Pete Townshend says this was one of the best performances they ever gave, and he`s right. This set is a must-have if, for nothing else, the nearly complete performance of "Tommy." Live at Leeds may be great, but this is what a Who concert was really like, and this is exactly what it was like in the Isle of Wight Festival. The Who took the stage at 3 am, reached the climax in Tommy at around 4:20, and played on through until 5 am, stopping only because Pete`s guitar broke on him (it usually worked the other way around, didn`t it?). Townshend later expressed how frustrated he was that they couldn`t keep the momentum going. Bottom line: outstanding performance, a rare treat to almost all of "Tommy," and one of the greatest bands of that time at their peak. A must-have. | | | -- zzzz |
