A classic album, overwhelmed by extras
I give this album 4 stars because this is a very convenient CD. Perhaps the extras ruin the mood of the original, 9 track album, but the extras do reveal some interesting things about the Lifehouse project. First, Baba o`riley is featured in its original version we all know and love. Bargain and Love aint for keeping are both songs with about the same frequency. My wife is the classic John Entwistle number, nothing much knew. Gettin` in tune is a little over played but is still a good song. Going mobile is also a very good song. Behind blue eyes in its original version is the definitive version. WOnt get fooled again as usual. Here`s where the extras begin. We have heard the rest of the extras on the first disc in the 1995 re-release of Who`s next, with different takes and more songs, really nothing speacial, believe me. The second disc delivers an undermining performanceof several songs off of who`s next. Moon`s drumming in this year is still very good and continues to be all the way up until 1976, when he started to slow down. The second disc features guitarist from Mountain, Leslie west. These songs are really a dissapointment for all the money you havr to pay to get it. This disc features two versions of Pure and easy but doesn`t include the definitive 1973 version. Overall this album is damaged by its extra tracks but it is more convenient if your looking for lots of material. By the way if you are into live stuff get Join together which will soon be out of print but offers 34 amazing songs.
Ground-breaking classic
Although I`m mainly a classical and jazz buff, there`s still a lot of popular and especially rock music that I like.

Like the mythical Phoenix bird, which arose from its own ashes, this album has emerged in several different versions (although how can you improve on perfection?). Pete Townshend has privately released a version of the album based on his ambitious Lifehouse project, and Steve Hoffmann at MCA also issued one. But the original album was the one that shook the rock world and virtually redefined rock `n roll back in the early 70`s.

The best thing about this release is the six tracks that weren`t included in the original album. Several songs from the live performance at the Young Vic theater were included that didn`t make it into the original album. They also claim it`s the first time since the original album that the original masters were used, although Steve Hoffmann at MCA also claimed that he used the original masters in his CD, which is still available in Canada. (I was just in Canada recently and forgot to pick it up). :-)

Anyway, even if you already have the other albums, this one is still worth picking up for the songs that aren`t on any of the other versions. There are some technical details in terms of the sound quality that I won`t bore you with, but if you`re interested check out Bradley Olson`s detailed discussion of these points.

This Deluxe Edition Of "Who`s Next" Is Worth Every Cent!
Originally released in 1971, "Who`s Next" was a landmark album for The Who. This album depicts some of The Who`s most creative and best songwriting ever. Songs such as "Baba O`Riley", "Bargain", "Behind Blue Eyes", "The Song Is Over", "Getting In Tune" and "Won`t Get Fooled Again" clearly show The Who`s ability to write beautifully crafted acoustic based songs as well as straight ahead no holds barred rockers. This special Deluxe Edition of "Who`s Next" has been remastered (again) and disc one includes the original album as well as songs from The New York Record Plant Sessions (all tracks have been newly remixed). Songs from this session include a fabulous version of the Marvin Gaye classic "Baby Don`t You Do It", a longer and alternate version of "Getting In Tune" which is superb. A more raw sounding "Won`t Get Fooled Again" is also included. Other songs from the session include "Pure And Easy", "Love Ain`t For Keeping", and "Behind Blue Eyes".

Disc Two contains a "live" concert at The Young Vic Theater recorded on The Rolling Stones Live Mobile in South London on April 26, 1971. The Who`s performance has to be heard to be believed and the average listener may even think he/she are listening to studio versions of the songs played. There are songs from "Who`s Next" such as "Love Ain`t For Keeping", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Won`t Get Fooled Again", "Bargain", "Getting In Tune" as well as one of The Who`s first hits "My Generation" and classics such as "(I`m A) Roadrunner" and "Young Man Blues" to name a few. Also included is a twenty seven page booklet which includes interesting information on each song as well as other tidbits and nice photos of the group. This 2-cd Deluxe Edition is clearly better than the remastered single disc version of "Who`s Next" and is worth every cent and more. If there`s one Who album (or cd in this case) you buy make this be it. You will not be disappointed. Highly Recommended.
