A truce to Music Fan From The United Kingdom
To a music fan in the United Kingdom, a truce is in order for us. I apologise for my earlier comments. I made them without the knowledge of your long-running interest/love for The Who, and for your experience at Who gigs live, in the flesh. You are right, The Who now is not what it used to be, although they still can crank out better noise than most bands today. I stand by my earlier statement, however, that The Who`s show at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, in 2000 (with Entwistle, Daltrey, Townshend, Starkey and Rabbit the ONLY ones on stage, yeah! Great, fiery, stripped-down sound that evening. The Who sounded better than they did on the still-great Royal Albert Hall DVD) came within shooting distance of some of their 1970s recorded performances (although, granted, Starkey isn`t quite Moon - but, as a bassist myself for 20 years, I can say Entwistle sounded better than ever that night - my CD recording blows me away with each listen. I had no idea The Ox could play so funky by popping, slapping and bending the strings with ease). I will admit that their 2002 show in Dallas wasn`t up to that standard, but still a good show anyway. The Ox definitely was missed that night, as the absence of his bass lines on the new recordings.
Anyway, just wanted to make peace with a fellow Who brother. What`s your favorite Who LP? And what was your favorite Who gig you attended? I wish they`d put out more on DVD (or CD at least).

Peace

Well, at least the new songs rock!
If you are new to The Who`s music, then this might be a nice place to start. The Who have released about 30 "Greatest Hits" packages over the past 2 decades and this one is a good "primer". Whereas the "Maximum R&B" box set is a collector`s dream, the Who are obviously trying to find some relevance in this organic-hip-hop-pop-tart-laiden world. They don`t have anything else to prove...

or do they?

So it took Pete Townshend 20 years to find his songwriting voice again (and to plug in the electric guitar)? So be it. The new songs on this compilation, "Old Red Wine" and "Real Good Looking Boy" stand up nicely with some of Pete`s better compositions... musically that is. Zak Starkey is a monster drummer in league with his former teacher and the man he replaced, Keith Moon. The Townshend power chords are back. Daltrey is proving why he is a GREAT rock and roll singer. So what`s the problem? Greg Lake does a disappointing job of filling in for the late John Alec Entwistle, then again that may be due to the mix. Who could ever replace John? Still, the songs are a perfect mix of (as someone posted earlier) "All the Best Cowboys..." and "Quadrophenia" era Townshend. I just wish John had survived long enough to play on these.

Great old music; good new music from an outstanding institution of rock.

A who collection worth buying!
Finally an awesome package of hits from the Who! After a few greatest hits albums, I decided to pick up "Then and Now" and I cant get over how great it is. Sure its got some of my favorites such as "My Generation", "Pinball Wizard" and "Behind Blue Eyes" (I hate the limp bizkit version). But the cd itself comes in some of the coolest packaging ive ever seen, with a whole mess of pictures and posters from the past 40 years of their career. Its good to see the pics of all the original members hangin out, being such a big fan I dearly miss Keith Moon and John Entwistle, but their replacements (touring drummer Zak Starkey and bassist Greg Lake) do a fine job on the NEW tracks featured on "Then and Now", that`s right 2 new songs are on the album, "Real Good Looking Boy" (tribute to Elvis) which is a very catchy tune, one of my fave`s on the album and the other new song is "Old Red Wine", a tribute to their fallen band mate, John Entwistle. If you don`t have the time to hit up your local record store for the album, you can buy the album on itunes or napster both of which very convineient and easy to use. This has been the best I have spent all year!
