Good but really not the best
I`ll be honest, I bought this album with high anticipation but I listened through and couldn`t help thinking to myself that they could have done better. "Melancholy Empire" is a pretty catchy song and so is "Alchemist of Sorrows" For anyone getting into Cathedral, I suggest getting "Carnival Bizzare" It focuses more on the stoom element other than traditional doom Cathedral fans are used to from previous albums. Check it out. You might like it more than me.
An engaging listen
"heavier than the last/first album".
Such an overused phrase to describe most metal albums,
yet it never becomes trite when it is the truth.
That is exactly what this album is. Heavier than the last.
It`s still a compliment to those that deserve it and Cathedral deserves it. They`ve been running in this game for 10 yrs and now they are doing what they do best. Grind.
They crushed with "Forest of Equilibrium" and
"The Ethereal Mirror". They expanded with "The Carnival Bizzare" and "Supernatural Birth Medicine". Now they are crushing harder than ever before. Many people compare "doom" metal w/Black Sabbath, but these guys go beyond Sabbath. They are redefining expanding and creating beyond the blueprint that Sabbath laid down back in the day. They do it naturally, with finesse and with a keen sense of pacing.
pretty good
not exactly what i was hoping for but good nonetheless. i was expecting really slow doom metal, but as i was told there were some good bits of stoner rock in here. this thing is equal parts doom, sludge and stoner and reminds me of a couple bands, namely black sabbath(of course) and the melvins. lee dorian`s voice even reminds me of king buzzo when he`s yelling. pretty thick when it`s distorted(where it reminds me most of the melvins), the doom parts kill, and then there`s a nice mix of acoustic and quiet parts. good album, nice mix but i`m gonna have to go buy forest of equilibrium and their earlier works. not slow enough ..
